Across multiple live arrangements, both an analog synthesizer and a neural machine interact through processes of similarity and difference, drawing on a vocabulary of 28 voices and a corpus of 4,200 words. Each performance is site-specific, incorporating the unique acoustic and architectural qualities of the venue as an active component of the work. By focusing on shifting diphthongs that interrogate the phonetics of American English, “Utterances II” subverts traditional language structures and celebrates the fluid, transformative nature of sound.
