Utterances is an ongoing series of live works examining how voice, machine, and architecture shape the material and temporal experience of sound. Across multiple performances, an analog synthesizer and a neural machine engage in processes of similarity and difference, drawing from a shared vocabulary of 28 voices and a corpus of 4,200 words. Through this dialogue, the system generates a shifting field of phonetic expression—one that oscillates between intelligibility and abstraction.
Each performance is durational and site-specific, incorporating the acoustic and architectural properties of its setting as an active compositional force. The works unfold through gradual transformations, where fragments of speech, pitch, and tone evolve in time, exposing the mechanical and human limits of articulation. By focusing on the movement of diphthongs and the phonetics of American English, Utterances subverts fixed language structures and celebrates sound’s fluid, transformative nature.
Across its iterations, the series treats utterance as both a sonic and spatial event—an act that resonates within and beyond the boundaries of language, duration, and the architectures that contain it.
