“Televideo Studio” 608 5th Ave, New York, NY (former TOP SHOP Flagship building), Performa Arts for the Performa Biennial, 2021, October 12-27, 2021
I have taken residence within a vacant flagship retail store on 608 Fifth Ave, New York City for the month of October as part of the Performa 21 Biennial. The store, like so much of the Jurassic 20th century retail construct, has fallen on bad times post-pandemic. I have reimagined this space as a broadcast studio for performance and sound. The tele-set environment is not a permanent construct but exists as an ephemeral body- utilizing the immediacy of video, the televisual audience, and a play of the “live” through a multi-dimensional lens. Here, virtual spaces overlay with the real in an assemblage that can only exist in signal-space. I’m building these “sets” to be activated, embodied, and allowing dimensions to move with operative cues (dolly in, pan-left, zoom out...). Within this space, the multi-floor escalators act as the metronome-clock and a cast of futurist Intonarumori sounds a machinic noise ensemble, mirroring the mechanical noises present in the urban surround.
