The collaboration explores sound and vision through analog methods and electronics. Work is presented in both a performative context as well as exhibited. Their hybrid station for manipulating video signals and soundwaves is comprised of signal generators, TV monitors, video mixers, and modulators. Kiernan and Keddie also direct and operate E.S.P. TV, a live taping broadcast on MNN network (http://esptvnyc.com/). He worked with developing technologies to manipulate images on 16mm film. Such techniques are now part of the definitive language of analogue video mixing. From his earliest work in 1966, we see a breaking of the image as whole into kaleidoscopic renderings. His later work articulates this idea further into a psychedelic dance of image, color, and sound. Tom DeWitt Ditto (San Francisco, CA), one of the founders of Canyon Cinema, has had notable achievements in both the arts and sciences. A Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation as an artist, a three time Fellow of the National Endowment of the Arts and a Fellow of the American Film Institute; he has also been named four times as a Principal Investigator for the National Science Foundation and served as a Fellow of the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts where he designed a novel telescope.After an apprenticeship in film under Stan Vanderbeek in 1965, Tom DeWitt met Scott Bartlett and the two put together a unique light show based on film loops that eventuated in OffOn (1967). David First (Philadelphia, PA), as a composer, has created everything from finely crafted pop songs to long, severely minimalist drone-works. His performances often find him sitting trance-like without seeming to move a muscle, unless he is playing with his recently re-formed psychedelic punk band, Notekillers, at which time he is a whirling blur of hyperactive energy. The programme consists of seven artists with seven alternate, perceptive realities. Each artist welcomes the viewer into a fantastical, non-linear, patterned and psychotropic universe. A vertex is the meeting point of two planes. Seven vertices make up the heptahedron, a geometric shape that can transform into a number of different forms, or topologies such as the hexagonal pyramid and the pentagonal prism. is a lab is a lab, a structure for improvisation and collaboration that film artist Bradley Eros premiered at The Kitchen in 2007. On Saturday, Optipus—an NYC media collective composed of Eros, Keddie, and Seven, plus Katherine Bauer, Tim Geraghty, Rachael Guma, Sarah Halpern, Jay Hudson, Rachelle Rahme, and Pancho—presents expanded tentacles, an evening of three works with ephemeral projections and live soundtracks: Spectrum, a color-coded composition for expanded cinema with electronics, foley, and strings; Séance, a video of Houdini magic and mischief, with an electrified Ouiji board and ensemble; and The Owl of Minerva, dedicated to the death of Kodachrome film and other obsolete technologies of analog media. The artists represented have each uniquely contributed their own individual interpretations of the theme through a diversity of mediums and artistic methodologies including, but not limited to: film, painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, performance, and sound-in site-specific installations. Programs include screenings and live performances involving ontology, fantasma, and phatasmagoria. Sound programs reference ritual, phenomenology, and transcendence. Our aim for the exhibit, is to bring attention to the use of this specific symbolism in contemporary art and semiotics, and to bridge the more subdued pockets of history. <img Utilizing a movie theater as chosen location, the idea was to project a montage of found kodachrome film--a medium, now dead (or rather, comatose). Multiple projections would barrage the big screen, using a full-screen 16mm kodachrome feature, layered with multiple snapshot moments from home movies, instructional films, landscape, and a few chance oddities caught on film. An additional screen used for small gauge films stood center stage -becoming a pocket on the large screen behind it.The prepared violin with analog recording playback, and Morse code transmitter, and was chosen as the sound component of a multi-layered dialogue. This complex narrative of memory, sensation, and voyeurism, would create for the audience a visceral as well as visual experience. Veterans of expanded cinema, Bradley Eros and Lary 7, orchestrated the visual imagery in small gauge from the audience. I performed the soundtrack to coincide with the selected imagery. Artists, hackers, musicians, and filmmakers will activate every area of the Museum late into the night.
